During the 1960s and 1970s, Kansas City annexed large amounts of land, which are largely undeveloped to this day.

The areas of Greater Downtown in the center city, and sections near I-435 and I-470 in the south, and Highway 152 in the north are the only areas of Kansas City, Missouri, to have seen an increase in population, with the Northland seeing the greatest population growth.[55] Even so, the population of Kansas City as a whole from 2000 to 2010 increased by 4.1%.
